Food.Fun.Stuff: Honey Love
Taking all the fun out of honey or saving lives?? That's the question that is looming in Florida, just days after the state became the first in the nation to prohibit additives, chemicals or adulterants from being added to honey. After an overseas shipment entered Florida in 2006, honey producers began urging the FDA (*U.S. Food and Drug Administration) to create a national standard for honey production. The FDA couldn't accommodate their demands at that time and Florida decided to come up with its own, individual standard, hence no more additives to honey in the state of Florida as of July 13, 2009.
The new regulation states that only "natural food product resulting from the harvest of nectar by honeybees" is acceptable as unadulterated. State reps felt that the honey was often becoming "contaminated with insecticides or antibiotics" (Source). Based on the fact that Florida is the 4th. leading honey producer in the U.S., we're happy to hear this news. We'll pass on sweeter honey with additives and take the all natural good stuff for our tea in the morning...
