Johnna's Pick of the Week: Equinox (D.C.)
Now we can name a few hundred restaurants in the District that are overrated, but we've now begun our count on those that are underrated starting with: Equinox. Have you ever tasted something that made you instantly think "Delicious" and relax every muscle in your body?? This is how we felt when we took our first bite out of the House-Made Cavatelli Pasta, which wasn't exquisite because it was something new to the food game rather it was delightfully fresh (*Must have something to do with those local ingredients used in Equinox dishes that owner Todd Gray boasts about...) . By this point, we had enjoyed the Cauliflower soup and Creamy Artichoke Soup which built up the anticipation of what would follow these delicious beginners. The Pasta was a praise, however, the Duck was a disappointment (*and mind you, we are duck people...not just someone trying something new because its on the menu...).
The service was excellent: the waiter was knowledgeable, attentive and did everything with a smile (*Sad to say, many restaurants have lost these characteristics...) We also vibed well with the atmosphere with plenty of light flowing in from the outside and no overboard dress code. During a recession that is eating up everyone's pockets, Equinox may not be the place to bring the fam bam on an arbitrary Wednesday night, but it is definitely a place to celebrate a special occasion (*Just ask President Obama, who took First Lady Michelle here for their recent wedding anniversary...). Ever wonder how/why people spend ridiculous amounts on food sometimes?? Take a trip to Equinox, it will definitely give you a reminder course.

Equinox has flown under the collective radar for a number of years, as has Todd Grey as a DC Culinary Institution. To a large degree, Chefs at that level can be measured in part by how their former staff performs. Todd Grey has a half a dozen exec chefs in the top 100 restaurants in the area.
Glad that you had a good experience there.
